You need to start thinking of yourself as a brand. It’s 2021 and everything is moving online…now it’s time for you to do it too. Take your personality, work examples, your interests and share your story with people who want to listen!
So how do you take your story and bring it to life online?
Using just two social media platforms (I would push for three) will create your brand.
The two platforms you need: a website & a LinkedIn.
Before you do ANYTHING you need to answer these four questions and really think about them. If you skip out on answering these questions in detail, you’ll be lost. These questions will guide your story.
Okay #1 question… and shockingly the most difficult…
Who are you?
Think about the personality traits you want people to associate with you.
What are your strengths?
More about what you’re good at within your profession.
Talking with people, taking video, creating ideas
What do you do?
Describe your career.
What do you like to do?
Hobbies, side hustles, things you’re interested in that you want people to know about you.
All these answers contribute to your brand and the content you put on your website, LinkedIn and other social media.
Starting your website
Think of it as a first impression. When someone clicks your link what is the first thing they are going to say about it? What do you want them to say?
It can be 1 page or 7.
The bare minimum you need:
- Photos of you– you don’t need a professional. Just take your iphone and a friend and take a few good ones. Have some fun with it!
- Your name and a small blurb about what you do
- You contact info– resume, email, LinkedIn
- Examples of your work– videos, pictures, powerpoints, sales analytics– anything that shows your skill, put that on there!
As far as website makers, I recommend using Wix– it’s the easiest and the most straight forward website maker. There’s many awesome templates to create any kind of website you want. I first few websites I started on Wix, now I use WordPress. I switched over because I wanted to try something different, I liked the WordPress templates, and I wanted to start creating more long for blog posts and I think WordPress is better for that. I will say, it was more challenging to figure out the themes and to get what I wanted on my site.
I think it’s really important to have an idea of what you want your website to look like. The design is the fun part! Think about the aesthetic: What are your colors? Fonts? Themes/vibes?
If you need inspiration, check out Pinterest for ideas. Canva is amazing for creation and inspiration. I call it the photoshop for dummies and non designers. Other people’s website can be a great start, don’t copy and paste what they are doing but take an idea and make it your own.
Remember: I think having a website is as important as having a resume. You need it. When you submit your resume and your boss likes you and wants more of you, boom they can get more by going to your website and seeing you and your work.
Creating a LinkedIn
Now… Let’s talk about Linkedin. You need to make a Linkedin. It’s the networking platform. It’s how you make connections with professionals and learn about different careers.
You don’t have to post a ton, but you should keep your information as updated as possible and message people for advice and start the conversation. Honestly the reason I have my job today is because of LinkedIn. I messaged my boss, he called me, I got an interview– the rest is history. It’s a great social media to talk to professionals or to learn what people do day-to-day.
Okay so– You have a website, You have a linkedin,
You have a brand BUT I would say having one more platform would bring you to the next level.
A blog, YouTube, professional/hobby Instagram, Twitter, or Tik Tok… you want to find the platfrom that works for YOU!
Creating content is hard but it’s so rewarding and this is the best way to share your awesomeness with the world!
Push yourself and get digital.
